Character Q&A: Godzilla of Patrick Kelley's Godzilla: The Monster Fight Record Series #characterinterview

Today's guest is Godzilla from inside the pages of Godzilla: The Monster Fight Record Series by Patrick Kelley.  It is a pleasure to have him with us at The Literary Nook!

What is your name?

Godzilla, the King of the Monsters.

What do you look like?

Well, my appearance has varied over my long career, but generally speaking, try to imagine a Tyrannosaurus Rex with Stegosaurus dorsal plates and much beefier arms.

Where are you today and what are you doing?

Right now I am in Japan promoting my next film, Toho's Godzilla: Minus One, set for release in November 2023, the month of my 69th anniversary. My next film is receiving a state-side release a month later.

Describe the outside of your habitat.

Truthfully, I go and sleep wherever I want, so I see the entire Earth as my habitat. The entire planet is my kingdom; no other monster or alien invaders are allowed here. Typically, I do prefer to be in a dark underwater environment where no one can find me. After a day of wrecking cities and trashing enemy foes, I like to unwind and keep to myself a little bit.

What’s the mood outside right now?

I'm feeling well enough to go stomp Tokyo, but we'll see how the rest of the day goes before I make that decision.

What's your favorite thing to eat?

Subs...as in the underwater vessels. Give me one of those packed with nuclear material, and you're talking about a grade A meal for me.

What scares you?

Nothing...I'm Godzilla.

Do you feel as if you're misunderstood?

Absolutely. Humans get upset over me making the waters unsafe for traveling vessels, or coming ashore and destroying cities, but who started all this? People are the ones that blew up a nuke in my face and made me what I am. Can you blame me for retaliating?

Out of all the fights you have had, which one made you feel as if you almost were a goner?

I hate to show vulnerability, and I wish I could tell you I never had an issue with any of my opponents. Honestly, the fight against King Ghidorah and Gigan with that laser beam shooting Godzilla Tower almost went pretty badly for me. That imposter Mechagodzilla almost got me a couple of times too.

Patrick wrote a section in Volume II of his fight record talking about my close calls, but don't listen to him. I had everything under control.

What’s the last thing you do before you go to bed at night?

I have a pretty lengthy bedtime routine. I do some stretches, swim a few laps, teach my son Minilla how to be a proper monster, utterly devastate a city, get into a fight or two, and then sleep on some rocks nearby.

Do you have any friends?

I have allies and fighting partners. Rodan and Mothra are valuable teammates sometimes, but I wouldn't call them friends. Jet Jaguar and King Caesar needed my help and proved useful, but again, I don't know anything else about them. It's not like we hang out on the weekends. My son Minilla is always making friends with humans and I for the life of me can't understand that.

I guess the closest thing I have to a friend is Anguirus, my valuable fighting buddy. He's a tough, spike-backed, four-legged monster-sized bulldozer, and he proves his worth on the battlefield and is smart enough not to irritate me when we're at Monster Island.

Do you have any regrets?

Yeah, every time I lost a fight. I don't need Patrick documenting all of those losses, but he felt the need to call attention to it. The battle against the Mothra larvae from 1964 is particularly embarrassing for me.

If they made another Godzilla movie, would you be interested?

Of course! I've been at this for almost 70 years and I am not even close to being done! I've got my new movie coming out later this year, and then in 2024, I am teaming up with King Kong once again in a sequel to our 2021 film. I'm also branching out into streaming with a series on Apple+ set for release later this year.

I'm going to be all over the place very soon, so get used to seeing me!
