Character Q&A: Alexei Sokolovl of Jörg H. Trauboth's The Death of the Kremlin Czar #characterinterview

Today's guest is Alexei Sokolovl from inside the pages of THE DEATH OF THE KREMLIN CZAR by Jorg H. Trauboth.  It is a pleasure to have him with us at The Literary Nook!

What is your name?

My name's Alexei Sokolovl.

How old are you and what do you do for a living?

Thank you very much for the invitation. I am 53 years old and financially secure.  I prefer to let the media speculate about my wealth. But it is true that I am one of the richest people in Russia.  Incidentally, it's not true that I acquired my wealth illegally. Like others, I bought shares cheaply during the privatization of Russian state-owned companies and thus created the basis for my current real estate empire. Today, I know that money alone does not make you happy. Especially when you need the support of the Russian president to maintain your wealth. As a rich oligarch, you are his prisoner. But more on that later.

Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?

I come from a respected Russian family from St. Petersburg and am traditionally a nationalist Russian. I love my fatherland. However, since I lived in the USA for several years. I am also a politically western-minded person. I am in favor of basic democratic values that safeguard the freedom and dignity of citizens. That is not the case in Russia. On the contrary, we have become a dictatorship with a new Czar at the top.

I have been living miserably in this environment for too long. That is why I have decided to change Russia. Now you want to know how? Okay. We are a group of oligarchs who will overthrow the Russian president in a few days. Just like Caesar was overthrown by his senators. Everything is prepared. Even the new government. It will put an end to the terrible war against Ukraine, and we will reach out to the USA for a new partnership.

What would I love the most about you?

I have no idea. Maybe you would admire me because I will risk everything I have achieved to lead Russia into a new, better world.  So I am a resistance fighter who is ready to sacrifice his life. Perhaps you would call me crazy. Even if my plan fails, at least I tried. That alone counts. So I am an idealist. And privately? I'm in love with a woman who means everything to me. I want to share my future with her. Unfortunately, Yulia Smirnoff  is the partner of the Russian president and the mother of his two sons. Therefore, you could say that I'm also an idiot, a Romeo who lost his mind for love. I hope the Czar is dead before he finds out.

What makes you laugh out loud?

To be honest, I have lost that spontaneous quality. I live in a world of constant surveillance and betrayal. Everything I do is controlled. I am rich but unfree. There is not much to laugh about.

No, there was one event. After an emergency helicopter landing in the mountains of northern Italy, Yulia secretly came to my room at night.  I was lying in a 200-year-old wooden bed.

She stood naked in the moonlit room, jumped on me with a mighty leap, the picture of the Virgin Mary fell from the wall and missed us both by a hair's breadth. At the same time the church bells rang out in the village. I burst out laughing. I had no way of knowing that this was perhaps also a warning from St. Mary.

What is your most treasured possession?

My dignity, my authenticity

Are you a loner or do you prefer to be surrounded by friends?

I have become a lone wolf. I'm cautious even with my friends. You never know who might turn the knife on you. Many people try to get in touch with me. My only friend is Yulia.

What is your greatest fear?

My greatest fear is that my plan will fail, even though the coup is perfectly prepared.

If you could change one physical thing about yourself, what would that be?

My deceased wife said in her last weeks: “Alexei, you tend to play with risk and overstep boundaries. Make sure you don't overstep the mark.” It's hard for me to take that to heart, because I'm actually also a player who has to take risks. Right now, it's all or nothing.

However, I do make a point of eating properly. That's why I maintain my ideal weight and go to the gym every day. Low carbohydrates and lots of exercise work wonders.

If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?

I would pray to God that someone else would complete my plan and ask Him to forgive me for all my sins. But to be honest, I don't even want to know. If death comes, please make it quick and as unexpected as possible. My creator Jörg H. Trauboth has come up with something that I don't agree with at all. Shame on him! So read the story and you'll know what happens to me.

Character Q&A: Ben Marshall of Jens Boele's Urbex Predator #characterinterview

Today's guest is Ben Marshall from inside the pages of URBEX PREDATOR by Jens Boele.  It is a pleasure to have him with us at The Literary Nook!

What is your name?

My name's Ben Marshall.

What do you look like? Where are you today and what

are you doing?

I reckon I'm about average height, with a sturdy build from years of hard work. Got a bit of gray creeping into my hair, but that just comes with age. As for where I am today, I'm out patrolling the perimeter of that old Cold War barracks I'm tasked with guarding. It's a quiet day so far, but you never know when trouble might rear its ugly head. Just me, Athos, and the wide open spaces.

Describe the outside of your home.

My two-story standalone house sits amidst a serene rural landscape. A colorful garden adorns the front, with a stone pathway leading to the welcoming front porch. Its weathered wooden siding exudes charm, while rocking chairs beckon visitors to relax. It's a tranquil haven where I find peace after a day's work.

What’s the mood outside right now?

The recent incidents at the barracks have left an unsettling atmosphere. The air is tense, with the memory of the homicides and the aftermath of the fire weighing heavily on everyone's minds. Despite the turmoil, I remain steadfast in my commitment to restoring peace and security to this troubled place.

What is your favorite piece of clothing?

My favorite piece of clothing? Well, it's gotta be my trusty old boots. They've been with me through every twist and turn, every step of the way. From trudging through muddy fields to standing firm in the face of danger, these boots have seen it all. They're sturdy, reliable, and just plain comfortable. Plus, there's something about the way they fit just right that makes me feel like I can take on anything that comes my way.

What scares you?

What scares me? Well, I reckon it's the thought of failing to protect those I care about. Whether it's Nela, my old dog Athos, or anyone else who's counting on me, the fear of letting them down weighs heavy on my mind. After what happened with the Sherwin brothers and the ambush, I can't help but feel a sense of unease knowing that danger lurks around every corner. But I won't let fear paralyze me. I'll do whatever it takes to keep them safe, no matter the cost.

How would your parents describe you?

If my parents were still around, I reckon they'd describe me as a determined and hardworking fella. They raised me to value honesty, integrity, and standing up for what's right. I like to think they'd be proud of the man I've become, even if my line of work ain't exactly what they had in mind. They'd probably say I've got a stubborn streak a mile wide, but that ain't always a bad thing when you're standing up for what you believe in.

What’s the last thing you do before you go to bed at night?

The last thing I do before I hit the sack? Well, I reckon it's taking a look through the binoculars at the barracks, making sure there ain't no lights wandering around where they shouldn't be. It's become a bit of a nightly ritual for me, a final check to ensure everything's as it should be before I call it a day. Can't be too careful, especially with all the trouble that's been brewing lately.

Who is your best friend?

My best friend? Well, that'd have to be Athos, my loyal old Golden Retriever. He's been by my side through thick and thin, never judging, always there when I need him. There's something about the bond between a man and his dog that just can't be beat. He's more than just a pet, he's family.

Do you believe the author did a bang up job of portraying you as a character that everyone would love to read about?

I reckon the author did a mighty fine job of portraying me. They captured my essence, my struggles, and my determination to protect what matters most. Whether it's facing off against the Sherwin brothers or forging a bond with Nela, they've brought my story to life in a way that folks can connect with. And if my tale brings a bit of excitement and intrigue to readers, well, that's just icing on the cake.

About the Book

A relic from the Cold War, the old barracks beckon photographers, influencers, and adventurers, shrouded in secrets and peril. Nela and Tess dare the eerie ruins for their photography thesis, while Zander, Yelka, Vivien, and Damon embark on a simultaneous shoot. Amid the abandoned shadows, Yelka’s group runs into Steven and his ruthless gang, initially outsmarting them. Yet, Nela and Tess fall victim to a nightfall ambush, escaping but torn apart. As adrenaline courses through the gang, they stalk Yelka and her friends, unleashing a relentless manhunt. Vivien becomes their captive, setting off a chain reaction. Tess encounters Damon and Yelka, while Nela, guided by Ben, the barracks’ security manager, races to find Tess. Yelka strives to rescue Vivien, trapped in an abandoned outdoor pool. On his lone pursuit, Zander witnesses the gang’s brutality, delving into a darker realm within himself, spurred by the horrifying thrill of Steven’s actions. The scene propels Yelka, Damon, and Tess into a frenzy, unleashing chaos to liberate Vivien. Nela and Ben, attempting to overpower the gang, witness Yelka and Vivien’s escape as the gang closes in. With the arrival of Steven’s older brother, Henry, the stakes are set; the old military hospital transforms into a battleground. No one is to leave alive, and a matter of life and death ensues. In the ruthless clash, Nela and Yelka emerge as the lone defenders, while Zander pursues a mission for his own catharsis. In Henry’s basement, dubbed his Hades, the teams converge for a pulse-pounding final duel, where survival is the ultimate prize.

Character Q&A: Adam Fischl of Evy Journey's The Golden Manuscripts #characterinterview

Today's guest is Adam Fischl from inside the pages of The Golden Manuscripts by Evy Journey.  It is a pleasure to have him with us at The Literary Nook!

What is your name?

Adam Fischl

What do you look like? Where are you today and what are you doing?

I’m in my late forties, my hair is thinning and graying on top, but you can see it’s blonde underneath. My face has turned plumpish, and my eyes have gotten squinty. And I’ve developed a bit of a paunch.

Right now, I’m sitting in my office, shuffling through routine paperwork.

Describe the outside of your home.

I live in a 1900 sq ft one-story California bungalow with trees all around the house. You see this set-up all over this area. Someone comes every two weeks to clean up my yard of fallen leaves from my trees and trees that encroach from my neighbors.

What’s the mood outside right now?

Our street is rather busy. It’s on a route that leads to the university two miles away. So, it’s the usual din from cars going to and from campus. But still, it’s nothing like you’d get in the big cities.

What is your favorite piece of clothing?

My stained painter’s smock. It’s seen me through a lot of projects.

What scares you?

That generations from now, people will find my work commonplace.

How would your parents describe you?

They’re proud of me—the first in the family to teach at a big university. But we don’t see each other much. Once a year maybe. They live in the Midwest.

What’s the last thing you do before you go to bed at night?

I read one of my art books. I have a big library and I collect books, many of which I haven’t read.

Who is your best friend?

Apart from my wife who’s also an artist? I’d say that lately it’s Nathan’s dad. He’s a well-respected neurosurgeon who’s developed a late interest in the arts. The last few months, I’ve been to their house for dinner maybe half a dozen times.

Do you believe the author did a bang-up job of portraying you as a character that everyone would love to read about?

I’ve never truly understood what bang-up means. Anyway, as an art professor, I hold a lot of power and prestige. So, I can’t complain. And I believe that despite playing a secondary role, the author portrayed me to come across as a flesh-and-blood character with my own idiosyncrasies. In fact, I think she modeled me after one of her own art teachers.

About the Book

A young woman of Asian/American parentage has lived in seven different countries and is anxious to find a place she could call home. An unusual sale of rare medieval manuscripts sends her and Nathan—an art journalist who moonlights as a doctor—on a quest into the dark world of stolen art.  For Clarissa, these ancient manuscripts elicit cherished memories of children’s picture books her mother read to her, nourishing a passion for art.  When their earnest search for clues whisper of old thieves and lead to the unexpected, they raise more questions about an esoteric sometimes unscrupulous art world that defy easy answers.   Will this quest reward Clarissa with the sense of home she longs for? This cross-genre literary tale of self-discovery, art mystery, travel, and love is based on the actual theft by an American soldier of illuminated manuscripts during World War II.

Character Q&A: Sunny Sullivan of Robin Jay's Sunny's Secrets #characterinterview

Today's guest is Sunny Sullivan from inside the pages of SUNNY'S SECRETS by Robin Jay.  It is a pleasure to have her with us at The Literary Nook!

What is your name?

Sunny Sullivan

What do you look like? Where are you today and what are you doing?

I just turned 60, I still have blonde hair; I don’t think I’ll ever go gray. Plus, I keep fit between work and running around.  I think I could pass for 50.

Where are you today and what are you doing?

I was widowed in 2003 when my husband John was sent on a deployment to Afghanistan. He was killed by a suicide bomber. I never thought I’d recover. It took time and the help of friends, but I managed to recover. It’s hard to believe it’s been twenty years since I lost John. I’m still nursing. I don’t know if I’ll ever retire; I like helping patients too much. A long time ago, my friend Rohan, a retired oncologist, and I found a new way to heal people. It’s incredible! We traveled to India to learn this new healing method. I even managed to find love again. My second husband, Richard, is a doctor, and we live in Dayton, Ohio, not far from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He moved here from Virginia to be with me.

Describe the outside of your home.

I’m still in the home I had with John. I loved it then and still love it now. I couldn’t ever bear to leave it. My favorite part is the backyard and patio. The bottom half of the house is brick, so it works great with the pavers that make up the patio. The patio is a big part of what made me fall in love with the house the minute we saw it. I’m outside in the backyard from the first glimpse of spring until the first snow, it seems. It has such a warm vibe, which is important since the winters in Dayton can really get cold. I still buy fresh flowers every spring and plant them around the perimeter of the backyard. There is a nice yard with lush grass that’s just the right size and a big willow tree in the far corner.

What’s the mood outside right now?

The leaves that are still clinging to the trees are changing color. Fall in Ohio is spectacular! We might have a sunny day when we can enjoy coffee out on the patio, and then the next day, we have thunderstorms and wind that are brutal! It’s exciting, and we love the change of seasons.

What is your favorite piece of clothing?

Don’t tell Richard, but it’s actually one of John’s old USAF tee shirts. I don’t wear it very often, but when I do, it feels like John is right next to me.  I could never get rid of it.

What scares you?

I don’t think I could stand to lose Richard. Life is so precious! Losing John nearly did me in. In fact, if I hadn’t become friends with Rohan, whom I’d met at John’s funeral, I might not have survived. Rohan showed me how to heal people and gave my life purpose. And I wanted to honor John by being strong. I guess you could say I’m afraid of being afraid. I don’t like feeling weak. I’ve come so far and found my inner strength, which is something I’d wish for everyone. Once you find that, no one can take it away from you.

How would your parents describe you?

I was only seventeen when my dad died. He’s the one who wanted to name me Sunny. He thought I was everything. My brother, Buddy, was always jealous because I was a typical “Daddy’s girl.” My mother was so proud of me. She believed there was nothing I couldn’t do. I kept the family going after my dad died. She calls me her strong soldier. If she only knew how scared I was then. After our dad died, she didn’t move for nearly a year. She just sat there in our living room. I finally suggested we go for drives. It seemed to do the trick because a few months later, when I insisted we take a family vacation, she said, “Okay.” That’s when my mom met Danny Gold. They’ve been together ever since.

What’s the last thing you do before you go to bed at night?

I say my prayers. I thank God for my life and for Richard. And I thank him for my dear friends and ask him to protect them. Then, I ask him to end suffering and pain and to help me continue to heal people. And I always end by asking him to take good care of John.

Who is your best friend?

It’s a close tie between Jen Logan and Rohan Ray. Jen is my best girlfriend. She always has my back and we have such a great time together; we’re always laughing. I met her soon after John and I moved to Dayton. I didn’t have many friends growing up because I was busy taking care of my family. Then I went to nursing school. I’ve always been too busy for friends. So, when I met Jen, we hit it off perfectly! I love her with all my heart. She is married to John’s best friend, Roger, who was in the Air Force with John. He’s retired now. I honestly don’t know what I’d do without them in my life.

As for Rohan, he’s unlike anyone I’ve ever known. We’ve been friends for twenty years now and he’s getting older. I thought he was old when I met him! He’s smart and kind. People always wondered if we were more than just friends, but it was never like that. He looked out for me and was more like a father figure. His friendship means the world to me.

Do you believe the author did a bang up job of portraying you as a character that everyone would love to read about?

Yes, I do! One comment about the story said, “One of the novel’s strengths is the way it masterfully and vividly depicts Sunny’s emotions during the initial stages of her grief and inner struggles…. The author’s ability to convey the depths of Sunny’s despair and the emptiness she feels in the absence of her husband is truly remarkable.” Yet, as I’ve shared here, I became very strong as a result of all the adversity I’ve faced. If readers love a psychological/medical thriller, they’ll be rooting for me to get through my challenges successfully. And, they’ll likely wonder what THEY would do if they were in my position.

I care deeply about people, and I think readers will feel my positive energy and root for my success, despite the fact that what I’m doing is unorthodox and questionable, at best. Being a nurse, working so closely with patients who are between life and death, makes me appreciate everything good about life. I think we could all stand to read a story that’s life-affirming and positive.

About the Book

A suicide bomber changed Sunny’s life forever. A nurse from a military family, she finds herself devastated and alone. At her husband’s funeral, she’s approached by a mysterious Indian doctor, Rohan Ray, who shows her how to switch Life Force Energy between two people – those who are about to end their lives and patients who would give anything to live another day. Playing with fate is not for the faint of heart. Will the crushing responsibility be too much for Sunny to bear?
