What is your name?
Sarafina di Ramonicci
What do you look like? Where are you today and what are you doing?
I’m rather petite. I have a warm complexion with striking blue eyes. My hair is dark—with wild curls I can’t keep pinned.
Today, I’m sitting in my bedroom, staring out the window. Behind me, servants are packing my trunks. I’m capturing my final moments in Malta, my home. Soon, I’ll be boarding a ship bound for America. I’m going to meet my future husband in Nouvella Orleans.
Describe the outside of your home.
My home in Malta is bright and airy. Tiles floors are laid in intricate patterns that I used to follow throughout the house as a child. Large windows, tall open doors, and the high ceilings are keeping me cool. Outside of my house is beautiful and wild. My father’s olive grove stretches for miles, and my mother's gardens are abundant. The essence of jasmine, lavender, and basil waft through the air and fill my senses. I will miss my home.
What’s the mood outside right now?
Morning has grown late, and the time for me to leave grows nearer. My father is barking orders at the servants packing the carriages. My mother is crying. The entire house is bustling about, preparing for my departure. And still, I sit staring out my window.
What is your favorite piece of clothing?
I haven’t any favorite clothing, but the lace handkerchief clasped in my hand, is most dear. Dearer than the trunks behind me, filled with the finest silks. The day I found out I was to marry the British consul in Nouvelle Orleans, my mother told me a story to calm my troubled heart. She told me about a young woman who was being chased by invaders. She hid in a cave and prayed to the heavens for help. Within that moment, a spider quickly weaved a web over the opening. When the invaders came, they couldn’t see the entrance to the cave, and thus she was saved. My mother handed me the handkerchief resembling that of a spider’s web. She explained that I wasn’t to fear my coming marriage, that I’m always protected.
What scares you?
Marrying a stranger.
How would your parents describe you?
Fiery, opinionated, and stubborn
What’s the last thing you do before you go to bed at night?
Since the news of my engagement, I pray every night that I'll have a good marriage. I also pray that if my husband is unkind—much like the young in my mother's story—I’ll be rescued.
Who is your best friend?
Maya. She’s not just a servant, but my best friend since childhood. When she heard that I was leaving Malta, she insisted that she go with me. And there was no changing her mind.
Do you believe the author did a bang up job of portraying you as a character that everyone would love to read about?
I think she’ll do a good job showing my strength, and my
determination. The progression of my character will be interesting,
because there are some harsh realizations I must face. Decisions that I
must make. I hope she doesn’t reveal just how stubborn I can be, and
deadly. But something tells me that she will…
Sarafina di Ramonicci sets sail for America as the promised bride in an arranged political marriage.
Taken prisoner at sea, she clashes with her captor and demands freedom, only to discover he is planning her future husband’s demise, with her as a pawn in their deadly feud. The challenge of escape tests her loyalty to family, human decency, and love.
Captain Nye Tarquin is a dangerous man. Left to die on the streets of New Orleans, he swears retribution on the man responsible. When he makes Sarafina part of his plan, he isn’t prepared for the fiery vixen aboard his ship, nor his desire to claim her as his own. When passion overtakes honor, he’s torn between his heart and his need for justice.
