Character Interview with Lady Penelope Arrington of A.S. Fenichel's THE EARL NOT TAKEN

Character Interview Day! Today's guest is Lady Penelope Arrington from inside the pages of THE EARL NOT TAKEN by A.S. Fenichel.  It is a pleasure to have her with us at The Literary Nook!

What is your name?

Lady Penelope Arrington, but my friends call me Poppy.

What do you look like?

I’m average height with dark hair and blue eyes. Really not much to look at and not at all fashionable.

Where are you today and what are you doing?

Today I have to meet with the dreadful Rhys Draper. He’s an earl and the brother of my dear friend, but he’s a terrible rake and I cannot stand him. But we are meeting at a very nice London tea house and there will be biscuits. I simply can’t resist a good sweet.

Describe the outside of your home.

I live in London. My friend, Aurora Sherborn has just been widowed and I have moved into her townhouse with our other two friends. We live on West Lane, which is a quiet street in a fine neighborhood.

You come face to face with your worse enemy. How do you react?

I’m so clumsy, I would probably fall on my face, but then I’ll get up and fight. Though, maybe it would be better to outwit my enemies.

What is your favorite piece of clothing?

I have a very nice peach day dress I like very much, but I tore the hem and it is not yet mended.

Do you have any phobias? What are they and how intense are they? How have they impacted your life?

I’m afraid of becoming the possession of a man. Marrying is out of the question. My parents are disappointed, but it can’t be helped. How can I let some man order me about for the rest of my life? I won’t have it.

How do you feel about mortality?

We shall all die eventually. I would risk anything for my friends: Aurora, Faith and Mercy.

How would your parents describe you?

Willful and disobedient. They sent me away to the Wormbattle School for Young Ladies when I was just fifteen. It was meant as a punishment, but I met my best friends there and we had the most splendid time. If only we could have stayed at school.

Who is your worse enemy?

I thought it was Rhys, but now I’m starting to doubt myself. He can be very kind when I least expect it.

You just woke up to find that war has been declared. What’s the first thing you would do?

Return to West Lane and make sure my friends are safe.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A scholar, but that option was not available to me. I have to settle for someone who reads a great deal and always tries to do what’s right.

If there was one thing you could change about yourself, what would that be?

I wish I was graceful like Mercy. Every step I take leads to a chance for disaster.

About the Book
Left standing on the side while their contemporaries marry into society, four young ladies forge a bond to guard each other from a similar fate . . .

Finishing school failed to make a proper lady of Penelope Arrington. But as a Wallflower of West Lane, Poppy has a far more vital role—she and her three best friends have made a pact to protect each other from the clutches of dangerous, disreputable men. So when one of them is about to be married off to a duke sight unseen, Poppy makes it her mission to divine the prospective husband’s true character. If only she didn’t require the aid of London’s most unsuitable rake.

Rhys Draper, Earl of Marsden, has known the headstrong Poppy since she was a young girl, naïve to the ways of men. To her eternal chagrin—and to his vague amusement—they have been at odds over the memory of their embarrassing first encounter all these years. Now, with his services in need, Rhys sees a chance to finally clear the air between them. Instead, he is surprised by the heat of their feelings. If the two do not tread carefully, they may end up in a most agreeably compromising position . . .
