Character Q&A: Dr. Justin Wright of Rob Kaufman's Altered #characterinterview

Today's guest is Dr. Justin Wright from inside the pages of ALTERED by Rob Kaufman.  It is a pleasure to have him with us at The Literary Nook!

What is your name?
Dr. Justin Wright.

What do you look like?
I have salt and pepper hair, dark blue eyes, and if you wanted to compare me to someone you knew, I’m a cross between Zac Ephron and Daniel Craig.

Where are you today and what are you doing?
I’m inside my office, sitting and my desk going through the file of my next patient, Jade. I’ve just finished Googling her to see if there’s anything omitted from her patient forms that might add some light to our upcoming session.

Describe the outside of your home.
Our home is white with black shutters and black trim. A typical New England Colonial with two additions added on for offices and guest rooms. We actually have a short glass walkway that leads from one side of the house to the other. We’re not worried about anyone seeing us because our home is surrounded by trees, hydrangeas, arborvitaes and other Northeastern bushes.

What is your favorite piece of clothing?
I like wearing an all-cotton Polo shirt with chinos and boat shoes. It’s a very comfortable outfit and I typically wear it at home or on the boat. However, in the office, I always wear a button down shirt and khakis with brown, leather loafers. It’s professional looking, but not overly so.

What scares you?
Anything that might endanger the lives of my children or my wife. I need to know they’re safe and both physically and emotionally healthy.

How would your parents describe you?
A very caring, sometimes overly compassionate and giving human being. They brought me up to believe that helping others is a priority, not only for the world as a whole, but also for myself. They may have driven that point home a little too hard because I often find myself sacrificing much of my own life in order to improve the lives of others.

What’s the last thing you do before you go to bed at night?
Kiss my wife, Mandy. Once on each cheek and then her lips. I couldn’t sleep without doing that.

Who is your best friend?
Mandy. We have grown together throughout our marriage and there is no one in this world I trust or love more. I have many colleagues and other people I’d call friends, but there is no relationship that comes close to that of my wife and I.

Where is your favorite hangout?
My backyard. It’s my oasis of sorts, a place I can relax, have a drink and sit in the wonder of nature – the foliage of the Maple trees in summer, the tiny red leaves of the burning bushes during fall, even the arborvitaes in winter with their stems drooping from the weight of the snow. Our backyard takes me away from the hustle and bustle of the world and with quiet comes thought, and with thought comes peace… at least, most of the time.

About the Book

When Frank Devlin walks into Justin Wright’s office, the renowned New York City clinical psychiatrist decides to take on one of the most challenging cases of his career.

After their first session, it’s obvious Frank has multiple personalities (“alters”) and each one couldn’t be more different than the other. Justin must get to know each individual alter in order to discover the best route to take so that Frank can live a full and happy life. He must also delve into Frank’s past, one filled with mystery, darkness and trauma — the true causes behind his personality split.

As Justin deals with Frank’s issues, he’s also confronted with his own demons: the kidnapping of Michael, his youngest son, seven years earlier… a wife he adores, Mandy, who refuses to accept her son is gone… a constant struggle with his oldest son, Dylan, who was watching over Michael the day the boy was taken. And his problems get worse as, unbeknownst to Justin, Frank and his alters are secretly weaving themselves into his life in ways that will affect the Wright family forever.

A suspense-filled story driven by emotion, angst and the ultimate revenge, “Altered” brings readers down a twisted path of uncertainty and mind games — leaving them shocked, heartbroken and questioning what could possibly come next…

About the Author

Rob Kaufman novels are known for having characters with whom people can relate, while at the same time, bringing them on a journey from which most people would crumble.

His degree in Psychology was the first step toward getting beneath the surface of the people in his life. What followed was a lifelong search for what makes people tick – what forces them to become evil when deep down they are yearning for love. Rob’s characters walk this search with him, deep into the human psyche, creating psychological thrillers from everyday events.

Rob’s books are perfect for those who enjoy thrillers but also need strong emotion to keep them deeply involved with the characters.

“All my books hit home for me,” says Rob. “There are always parts that make me laugh out loud as I write them… and many, too many, that make me cry. And the great thing is, I’m finding that many readers of my books experience the same emotions.”

Rob’s books receive both national and international praise with most reviews noting that his storylines are extremely “unique” and “sobering” and the twists and turns are “masterful”.
